Esther Hagenmaier (*1975) lebt und arbeitet in Ulm. Ausgangspunkt ihrer zentralen Werkgruppe »shaped photographies« sind sehr häufig Bauten des renommierten Schweizer Bildhauer-Architekten Walter Maria Förderer. Ihre Fotografien können eine Kirche, ein Wohnhaus oder eine einfache Trafostation in sich bergen. Sie schneidet ihre Fotografien so, dass Bild und der Zuschnitt eine neue formale Einheit bilden. Die Fotografie ist bei Esther Hagenmaier nicht Abbild, sondern die Kunst, neue Bilder oder Räume zu vermitteln oder vorzuspiegeln. Reduzierte Formen und Farben in raffinierten Formaten sind Merkmale ihrer zurückhaltenden, leisen Kunst. Die Künstlerin wurde 2017 in die renommierte Deutsche Fotografische Akademie berufen.

“Die Welt hat Ecken und Kanten, das ist vermutlich allen klar, doch so klar, wie diese mit Esther Hagenmaier werden, waren sie wohl den wenigsten. Ihre Fotografien decken auf, wo sie sich verstecken: an Häuserwänden und Dächern, in Räumen und dort, wo das Licht nur teilweise hinkommt. Ausgeschnitten und somit aus ihrem Kontext gelöst wird die fotografierte Kante eigenständig, wird reine Form, Komposition, Fläche, Raum oder Körper. Eine friedlich anorganische Übereck-Utopie. Hagenmaiers Arbeiten strahlen eine Ruhe aus, eine Klarheit, die im Alltag zunehmend aus den Augen gerät. Esther Hagenmaier (*1975) lives and works in Ulm. The starting point of her central group of works “shaped photographs” are very often buildings by the renowned Swiss sculptor-architect Walter Maria Förderer. Her photographs can include a church, a residential building or a simple transformer station. She cuts her photographs in such a way that the image and the cut-out form a new formal unit. For Esther Hagenmaier, photography is not an image, but the art of conveying or simulating new images or spaces. Reduced forms and colors in refined formats are characteristics of her restrained, quiet art. The artist was appointed to the renowned German Photographic Academy in 2017.

“Everyone knows that the world has rough edges, but very few people have seen them as clearly as Esther Hagenmaier does. Her photographs show them where they are hidden: on house walls and roofs, in rooms and places where light only partially reaches. Cut out and thus removed from the context, the photographed edge takes on a life of its own and becomes a pure form, a composition, a surface, a space or a body. A peaceful, inorganic corner utopia. Hagenmaier’s works radiate a calm, a clarity that is increasingly lost sight of in everyday life.
